SACRED COWS IN INDIA

SACRED COWS IN INDIA

To India's millions of Hindus, the cow is a holy animal that can not be harmed. Respect for animal life has been a central theme in Hindu life.

Hindus believe that all living creatures are sacred - mammals, fishes, birds. The cow is more, a symbol of the earth because it gives so much yet asks nothing in return. In the hindu tradition, the cow is honored, garlanded and given special feedings at festivals all over India.

Lord Krishna says in Srimad Bhagavatam, "I can be worshiped within the cows by offerings off grass and other suitable grains and paraphernalia for the pleasure and health f the cows, and one may worship Me within the Vaishnavas by offering loving friendship to them and honoring them in all respect." SB 11.11.43

Protection of cows and bulls is possible only when cultured an pious minded citizens come forward to actively support the cause by their words, actions and wealth. Its is the responsibility of every one of us.

"Cow protection to me is not mere protection of the cow. It means protection of all that lives and is helpless and weak in the world. The cow means the entire subhuman world." - Mahatma Gandhi.

Khajuraho - Land Of The Moon God

                                                                 Khajuraho

Khajuraho is a town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, located in Chhatarpur District about 620 kilometers (385 mi) southeast of New Delhi, is one of the most popular tourist destination in India. Khajuraho Group of Monuments has been listed as a UNESCO World heritage sites, and is considered to be one of the "seven wonders" of India.

Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindus and Jain temples. It is famous for the sophisticated erotic sculptures on the beautiful temples. An amalgamation of science and art of architecture, these 10th-11th century temples have a very interesting legend behind them that connects them to the origin of Chandela dynasty. It is said that in a fit of passion and lust, the Moon God seduced and ravaged a beautiful Brahmin girls known as Hemvati, resulting in the birth of Chandravarman (the founder of the Chandela dynasty). Later, Chandravarman had a dream where his mother requested him to make a temple, which would reveal all aspects of the treasure of passion and erotic fantasy to the world.

Khajuraho's art is a manifestation of the essence of the philosophy of Indian aesthetics. The erotic sculptures of Khajuraho depicting Kama Sutra are unique in the world. These sculptures representing the Indo-Aryan architecture, congeal in stone a lyrical paean to love and passion and reflect the Chandela dynasty's passion and immense appreciation for the forbidden art, paradoxically, in the land of Kama Sutra. They cannot be passed off as just erotic sculptures, the temples have some of the most revered Gods of Hinduism.

The Khajuraho temples do not contain sexual or erotic art inside the temple or near the deities; however, some external carvings bear erotic art. Also, some of the temples that have two layers of walls have small erotic carvings on the outside of the inner wall. There are many interpretations of the erotic carvings. They portray that, for seeing the deity, one must leave his or her sexual desires outside the temple. They also show that divinity, such as the deities of the temples, is pure like the atman, which is not affected by sexual desires and other characteristics of the physical body.

Khajuraho oozes with passion, eroticism, dance and music and other finesses of creative arts depicted in sculpture and images of the temples. The 85 temples were built in North Indian 'Nagara' style of architecture, though only 20 of them have survived the rough weather conditions over long years of time.  The temples of Khajuraho are divided into 3 geographical groups: Western, Eastern and Southern.

The Khajuraho temple complex offers a professional light and sound show every evening. The show is about an hour long and covers the history, philosophy and the art of sculpting of these temples. It is held in the open lawns in the temple complex.

The Khajuraho dance festival held every year in the first week of February (1st to 7th), is an opportunity for visitors to experience various classical Indian dances set against the backdrop of the Chitragupta or Vishwanath Temples.
